AG Pruitt to Host Oklahoma Consumer Protection Day on March 1 at the State Capitol

OKLAHOMA CITY – Attorney General Scott Pruitt will join other law enforcement agencies, legislators and media representatives on Thursday, March 1, for the 2012 Oklahoma Consumer Protection Day at the State Capitol. The free event is designed to help Oklahomans avoid fraud, identity theft and scams.

Consumer Protection Day will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the second floor rotunda. Free document shredding will be available on the south lawn of the Capitol until 2 p.m.

“The Attorney General’s Office is proud to once again host this important event for all Oklahomans,” Pruitt said. “We receive reports every day of families or elderly homeowners who have been victimized by criminals through fraudulent contracting, financial scams or identity theft. Oklahomans need to be aware of how to avoid these crimes and protect their families from deceptive practices. The more information they have, the better prepared they’ll be.”

Local, state and federal law enforcement agencies will be available at information booths in the Capitol to discuss a variety of consumer issues. Outside, Shred It®, an Oklahoma City document shredding company, will provide free document shredding. To avoid long lines later in the day, participants are asked to arrive early.

At 10:30 a.m., Attorney General Pruitt will announce this year’s recipient of the Brad Edwards Consumer Champion Award. The award is given annually in honor of late journalist Brad Edwards, who was a champion for consumers for 25 years with his “In Your Corner” segment on KFOR-TV Ch. 4, in Oklahoma City.
