Attorney General Pruitt Appoints AAG Julie Bays as Public Protection Chief

OKLAHOMA CITY – Attorney General Scott Pruitt Friday announced the selection of Assistant Attorney General Julie Bays as the new Chief of the Attorney General’s Public Protection Unit. She replaces Tom Bates, who was named First Assistant Attorney General in October.

“As a prosecutor, Julie has fought for justice, fairness and consumer protection for more than a decade,” Pruitt said. “Her passion for her work and knowledge of the issues will be an asset to the AG’s Office as she steps into a leadership role.”

Bays, 50, earned a bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, at the University of Oklahoma in 1995 where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. She earned her Juris Doctor at the OU College of Law in 1998.

For the past 11 years, she has served as an assistant attorney general in the AG’s Public Protection Unit, successfully prosecuting civil antitrust, consumer fraud and charitable trust cases. Last year, she played an integral role with the Oklahoma Mortgage Settlement to help homeowners harmed during the foreclosure crisis.

Prior to joining the Attorney General’s Office, Bays spent four years in private practice in Norman.

Bays serves on several committees and boards, including the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee, the Federal Trade Commission’s Southwest Netforce and the National Attorneys General Association’s Antitrust Policy Task Force. She also teaches continuing legal education courses, and travels the state educating Oklahomans about identity theft and consumer fraud.

Bays, who lives in Norman, has two sons and a well-trained German shepherd.
