Drummond says veterans panel appointments not allowed by law, optimistic Legislature will resolve issues

OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 9, 2023) – Attorney General Gentner Drummond said today that while there are significant statutory deficiencies with recent appointments to the Oklahoma Veterans Commission, he is confident that state legislators will resolve the matter this legislative session by stripping the Governor of his autonomy over the panel.

At issue are efforts by Gov. Stitt to remove and replace three commission members.

State law requires that the commission consist of nine members, including a representative from six specified veterans’ groups.

Drummond to sue Biden administration over environmentalist dictate that harms farmers, ranchers, energy producers

OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 3, 2023) – Attorney General Gentner Drummond announced today his intent to file a lawsuit against the Biden administration if it does not withdraw a rule by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFW) that designates the lesser prairie chicken as a threatened species.

The rule, which is scheduled to take effect March 27, would place burdensome restrictions on Oklahoma ranchers needing to graze livestock, as well as unnecessarily impede development of energy pipelines, oil drilling, wind farms, and roads.

Drummond sues Biden administration over emergency health powers delegated to WHO

January 30, 2023

OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 30, 2023) – Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond is suing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to remove an illegal regulation from federal law that allows the World Health Organization (WHO) to exert its authority over the United States.

Filed last week in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Texas, the lawsuit notes that the HHS’s definition of public health emergency exceeds the agency’s scope by unlawfully giving the WHO the authority to invoke emergency health powers in this nation.

Attorney General Drummond orders independent counsel to review Glossip death penalty case

January 26, 2023

OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 26, 2023) – Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond announced today that he has directed an independent counsel to conduct a comprehensive review of Richard Glossip’s murder conviction and death sentence. Glossip was sentenced to death for the 1997 murder of Barry Van Treese in Oklahoma City. 

Drummond said he has retained former prosecutor Rex Duncan to review all aspects of the investigation, trial, sentencing and appeals process.

Attorney General Drummond comments on ruling in federal lawsuit over Illinois River

January 18, 2023

OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 18, 2023) – Attorney General Gentner Drummond lauded today’s decision by Oklahoma Northern District Federal Judge Gregory Frizzell favoring the State of Oklahoma in a long-running federal lawsuit over environmental damage to Oklahoma waters, particularly the Illinois River watershed and Lake Tenkiller. In 2005, then-Attorney General Drew Edmondson filed the suit against 13 poultry companies and subsidiaries for improper litter disposal.

Attorney General Drummond files request for more time between executions

January 18, 2023

OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 18, 2023) – Attorney General Gentner Drummond has filed a motion with the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals requesting that seven impending executions be conducted with more time between each event.

Drummond said he is grateful for the hard work of Department of Corrections (DOC) professionals who are spending many days each month in diligent preparation for a constant stream of executions. Oklahoma has had four executions over nearly five months, with 21 more pending.
